The world in constantly evolving and ideas that were once seen as radical soon become a societal norm. Sex and sexuality have often been a taboo topic, but are a central part of history because life itself would not exists without sex. Since sexuality, and even more so same-sex sexuality, were not often mentioned historically, there are many unknowns and inferencing must be done relatively often. Through the convergence of primary sources, such as court cases and diaries, and secondary sources such as essays and books, it is possible for historians to piece together the history of same-sex sexuality in Canada, and more specifically, Alberta. Although society has progressed to become more accepting and understanding, there are also many things that remain constant from early 20th century Alberta to Alberta today. Power Authority Almost every relationship has an unequal distribution of power, but this on its own is neither negative or positive. Imbalance of power become an issue when those in power exercise their control to exploit and disadvantage others. Unfortunately for men having sex with men in Alberta in the 1900’s, they had very little power in relation to the government and police. Police were actively surveilling parks, bars, and even opening mail and listening to phone conversations in order to find and condemn men seeking out sex with men or men suspected of looking for sex with men.
